Rumors connect Yamada, other Top League players to PRO Rugby

The PRO Rugby off-season has been very quiet, particularly on the personnel front. This is no surprise, as the core rosters were released very close to the start of the season last year, but it does make for little discussion in the meantime. The most interesting rumor to surface so far is a broad one, regarding professional players in Japan: Numerous Top League players, including Akihito Yamada have received offers to play in the US. #rugbyjp — Japan Rugby Club (@JapanRugbyClub) November 29, 2016 (I should note that any reports…

As Rugby Canada opts out, PRO Rugby’s faults continue to show

PRO Rugby will remain an all-American league in its sophomore season after Rugby Canada backed out of their sanctioning deal with the league. This was announced by the league via Twitter last Wednesday, with more details coming out the next day when Rugby Canada and the league put out statements clarifying that it was a disagreement over the exclusivity of the deal that caused the Canadian union to change their minds. After the dust settled, both parties took a credibility hit in a mixed bag of a week for North…

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Sacramento, Denver Win Tight Matches

It was a week where there wasn’t a whole lot left on the line, as the league’s title fight is already set for next weekend, but PRO Rugby’s teams didn’t need any extra incentive in order to put on the most exciting weekend of matches to date. The results of both matches this week were up in the air with less than ten minutes remaining, a nice change of pace in a league where matches have been decided by halftime with increasing regularity.

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Stampede Secures Title Shot, Breakers Slump Continues

The first season of PRO Rugby is firmly in its final stretch now. Week 16’s championship clash between the Ohio Aviators and Denver Stampede is on the horizon but before that we have two weeks of what ultimately amounts to exhibition play. Ohio’s two consecutive bye weeks means that Denver is the only team in play that still has a shot at the title and the only thing on the line for them is the number of standings points they will have heading into week 16. While Denver works on…

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Ohio, Denver Close In on Title Fight

The chances of the week 16 match between the Ohio Aviators and the Denver Stampede becoming a de facto final took a few steps forward this week. The other teams had been taken care of for the most part, with Sacramento and San Francisco already officially eliminated and San Diego’s championship hopes dependent on very unlikely collapses from both the Aviators and the Stampede. All that’s left for the top two sides is to determine how many points they’ll have heading into the final weekend of the season and what…

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Big Victories for Ohio, Sacramento

Week 12 of PRO Rugby’s 2016 season is now in the books, and a few explosive performances are the story of the 4th of July weekend. Ohio’s win against San Diego pushes the Breakers to the edge of elimination while bolstering their own run at the title. Meanwhile, the Northern California derby was taken over by a dominant showing from USA’s fastest rising star, Langilangi Haupeakui.

PRO Rugby Line-ups for July 3

The rosters for week 12 have arrived and there is little in the way of surprises. Most changes involve players coming back into the line-up after being absent, including a number of players coming back from international duty. The rosters seem to be more stable than usual this week, which may mean that the teams are set for the final month of the season. There are no new names on any of these rosters and the only potential noteworthy debut is San Diego’s Jean-Baptiste Gobelet.
