PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Sacramento, Denver Win Tight Matches

It was a week where there wasn’t a whole lot left on the line, as the league’s title fight is already set for next weekend, but PRO Rugby’s teams didn’t need any extra incentive in order to put on the most exciting weekend of matches to date. The results of both matches this week were up in the air with less than ten minutes remaining, a nice change of pace in a league where matches have been decided by halftime with increasing regularity.

Sacramento, San Francisco Eliminated From PRO Title Race

What has been assumed for a while is now mathematically true: neither the Sacramento Express nor the San Francisco Rush will win PRO Rugby’s maiden championship. The title race is down to the Denver Stampede, Ohio Aviators, and possibly the San Diego Breakers after the Northern California squads officially knocked themselves out with this weekend’s results. Before getting into the matches themselves, here’s the math. The best case scenario for the Express would garner them a total of 30 points in the standings, fewer than the number of points that…

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Week 10

This week’s matches include two results that are upsets if you’re going by the standings but aren’t completely out of left field to anyone paying close attention to the form of these teams. On Saturday, San Francisco, whose improvement finally bore fruit with their win against Ohio in week 7, faced a San Diego team that has slipped over the past few weeks. On Sunday, a white hot Ohio squad went head to head with a Denver team that has come very close to losing their unblemished record in their…

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Denver Tops The Table at Season’s Midpoint

Sunday’s top of the table clash between Denver and San Diego may have been the most highly touted match since the league’s debut and it certainly didn’t fail to live up to expectations. San Diego was within reach of first place going into the match while Denver fought to keep their spot on top of the standings as well as keeping their record unblemished. The result was a spectacle of pure aggression with a few key plays ultimately shifting the outcome.

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: Week 3

It’s the mid-point of what you could consider “phase one” of the season: a five week period where each team is taking on the other for the first time, giving everyone a chance to see how they measure up to the opposition before heading into the next set of matches against each team. This weekend gave us two matches that were entertaining in very different ways. In Ohio, we saw a team firing on all cylinders and putting on a clinical performance. In San Diego, we saw a clash of…

PRO Rugby Weekend Review: First Things First

The words “history” and “historic” were thrown around an awful lot this weekend by PRO Rugby, its teams, and its supporters. It was obviously an important weekend for the league and for American rugby, obvious enough that the historic nature of the weekend’s matches didn’t need to be hammered home to the point where the word nearly loses its meaning. And yet, it was, and its a great sign that this is one of my few complaints for the weekend. (The other, and bigger, complaint is not having a way…
